YOU SHELTERED ME

OUR SHELTERS

Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego provides support to men, women, and families in need. At Catholic Charities, we recognize that some of our unsheltered clients have pets. With our program, both the client and their fur family can benefit from our shelters. Animals living on the streets are also at risk and need help and support. CCDSD operates a total of 6 homeless shelters. With short-term housing, case management CCDSD’s goal is to get people off the streets and connect them with the resources necessary to build stability and improve their quality of life.

Rachel’s Women’s Center

Catholic Charities Rachel’s Women’s Center (RWC), a drop-in day center for homeless women for the past 36 years is located in downtown San Diego and is often the entry point to a continuum of services Catholic Charities operates for women experiencing homelessness. This program serves between 100-120 women a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. While most of the women served come from the downtown area, all women in need of assistance are welcome. RWC served 1,892 women with a daily average of 102 women using the Center each day.

Rachel’s Night Shelter

Rachel’s Night Shelter is an emergency, short term (90-120 days) overnight shelter for 35 homeless women, 18 years of age and older in downtown San Diego. In a typical year, the shelter provides 180 unduplicated women with a safe place to stay while they address the obstacles preventing them from ending their homelessness. Case management services focus on helping women find and secure permanent housing and/or increase their income, enabling them to remain stably housed and prevent future episodes of homelessness.

Rachel’s Promise

Rachel’s Promise is designed to meet the needs of women facing multiple complex barriers to housing and to provide those services in a safety focused, trauma informed setting. Rachel’s Promise is different than a traditional shelter. First and foremost, it is a women’s-only shelter, immediately giving women, many of whom are victims of domestic violence, a haven while taking a trauma-informed approach to helping them re-establish a feeling of security.  This shelter also has semi-private rooms, adding to that sense of safety and setting the precedent for participants to ultimately envision their own permanent housing. To help them get there, Catholic Charities provides programs and resources that each woman can access, and embrace based on her situation. The essentials—like meals, showers, and clothing—help establish a routine, which then sets the foundation for a plan of action. The plan of action culminates with housing assistance.
